Aliyah Explains | Podcasts are lit, here’s my top 5.

Hey guys! While I’m super obsessed with Music and such, I’ve also been heavily into podcasts. This interest developed mainly because I grew up listening to morning radio shows as well as afternoon talk radio with my parents.

I’m talking the Jeff Fox Show, Tom Joyner Morning show, and Elvis Duran as a youngin’ and I graduated to The Breakfast club in my high school years.

Podcasts became my thing when Breaking Bad ended, and I missed the show Talking Bad, the host, Christ Hardwick, promoted his podcast, The Nerdist, who didn’t make my top five but is for sure an honorable mention.

I branched out into what I now call my go to Podcasts, here’s my list!

5. Mmhmm, Girl

xgtxxhc0

Okay so I either found this podcast on twitter and one day after giving up on one of the first ones I listened to, I naturally loved it. They describe their show as “two dope girls with a podcast” and it’s accurate. The “hoe stories” are by far the funniest thing because the chemistry between Lola and Babz is perfect. You can tell there’s a real friendship there and I love that in podcasts. While these ladies are living their real lives on the west coast, they took a bit of a hiatus but are still pretty active on twitter. Check them out @Mmhmmgirl, because they mentioned they will be back for the summer, baby too. I cannot wait to hear more about Babz being a mama, and Lola’s updates.

4. Brilliant Idiots

Since I love the Breakfast Club, finding out Charlamagne had a podcast was dope, I immediately downloaded it and did not expect it to be different from the breakfast club. Boyyyy! All the penis talk and stuff was different, but their chemistry is still enjoyable. The guests they bring on the show are almost always interesting and enlightening. I’ve been introduced to some really amazing people via Brilliant Idiots and learned so much. (this is also how i was put on to Killer Mike and Angela Rye).  I love the friendship between Charlamange and Andrew because for a few months it seemed like all they did was scream and miss each others points. Last month, Charlamagne and Chris Morrow (Loud Speakers Network ceo) sat Andrew down to explain how his playing devils advocate and arguing for the sake of arguing could be tiring to listeners as well as them. Surprisingly, Andrew was extremely receptive to this idea and the more recent episodes have been very enjoyable again.

3. The READ

avatars-000051152214-37az46-t500x500

Alright y’all, this podcast hands down is  fantastic. Crissle and Kid Fury are naturally hilarious “NYC transplants” who talk about pop black culture.  These two Beyonce stans make me chuckle every single week on my way to work talking about Blue Ivy running the Knowles-Carter household.  Since neither of them grew up in New York City, it’s interesting to hear them talk about the very same frustrations I have with living here. At the end of the show, they read people who have done something so stupid you can’t ignore it.  you’re new, start with Crissle’s superbowl TV incident. I truly admire Crissle so much because she’s 100% sure of herself and has never been sorry for it. Role Model is an understatement.

2. Politically Reactive

e684d993-b66f-470e-ab3d-503dbbc641dc

This podcast is a bit different from the rest, although well within the Aliyah podcast interest bubble. I originally found this podcast while listening to This American Life, where on an episode W. Kamau Bell talks about race issues he faces having a white wife, while he is a black man still for the cause. It was so interesting that I watched his stand up, and followed his twitter where he promoted his podcast with his friend Hari, who’s also a pretty funny comedian. Before 45 was elected, I had a lot of research and questions about making an educated vote. I was one of those people who were told to vote democrat down the line, but I wanted to really know who i was voting for, and thats where this podcast comes in. Hari and Kamau explain and discuss in depth about just what the heck is going on in the world. Even after the election, this weekly podcast is so important for those of you who want to stay on top of politics like I do.

1. Bodega Boys

avatars-000174316582-230oru-t500x500

Alright, Desus and Mero have been entertaining me for an extremely long time. I followed Desus on twitter back when people jumped on hashtags until they were in TwitterJail. One day, there was all this talk about him being white, and my brother told me about Desus vs Mero, which was an extremely clever show in which they literally enjoyed each other’s company and making jokes very specific to growing up in New York City. Now their podcast drops almost always on Friday, but because it’s art, sometimes its late.  on pop culture and as Charlamagne would say, our Celebrity in Chief. Trust me, they’re hilarious, and if you can get through the AKA’s you’ll be just as hooked as I am. I was lucky enough to get the chance to meet Deus and Mero at a taping of uncommon sense where they gave out some stickers. They seemed incredible humbled to be recognized, especially because people were crowding around Charlamagne and N.O.R.E.

The Bodega Boys also have a dope late night show on Viceland called Desus and Mero, which is the visual art, which airs Monday – Thursday and I rush home to make sure I get to see it. These guys are so hilarious and definitely have earned their #1 stop on this list.

That’s all for now! Are you guys listening to podcasts I haven’t mentioned? Leave a comment and put me on!

xoxo Aliyah

Aliyah Explains | I’m Not Your Chocolate Drop

Celebrating Tbt with another oldie but goodie from my older blog

This this is a chocolate drop.

Okay so I’m about to start complaining so feel free to go back now.

No? We’re good? Y’all still reading?

Mkay. I was riding the train today, and this white male comes up to me, places his hand on my knee and said “Can I get to know you my sweet chocolate drop?” Like that was some great shit! Can you believe that? The nerve!
Ok; pause
I’m not the kinda person who’s just rude to people. I don’t mind being approached in any setting, as long as it’s polite. So no knee touching. Also, I guess it’s fair to say that SOME black people refer to themselves as chocolate, or caramel. But nah-uh kiddo, you’ve got the wrong one.

Resume;
So I stared back for a second, you know to make sure I heard him correctly and think of the appropriate response to then not be accused to being an angry black woman. I thought, then still rolled my eyes and put my headphones right back in my ear. A few stops went by and he still waved to get my attention. (now I’m riding the E train from the first to last stop, and I’m not the one to look away when I feel someone staring.) So I gave him the side eye and went about my ride until we got off. (don’t ask me what this white boy was doing on Jamaica ave in Queens but all I can say is gentrification is REAL!) He made a comment about me rejecting him because he’s white. Aha, but anyone who knows me knows that isn’t true, but nice try. There were comments thrown about a ghetto booty, and kinky hair which irked me enough to write this.

Now if he would have approached me respectfully, I would have never had a reason to come vent here. Why did you approach me to then criticize me when you were turned down? Is your pride that sensitive? And for the white people reading this, please just never call a black person something related to their skin color and expect them to keep the convo going. It’s awkward , especially with a stranger, and 9/10 times, we’ve heard that shit a million times before. You aren’t clever. Im not an ice cream, we’re not swirling anything. I know it was funny on OITNB but it’s not funny or appropriate here. And that’s why girls don’t wanna date you.
~ End rant.~

Aliyah Explains |I’m Done With My Natural Hair

Hey everyone, I’ve been celebrating Throwback Thursday by posting my favorite oldies from my previous blog

For the fifth time…

I’ve been natural for a little over six years now and I’m absolutely fed up. Again. Here’s the confessions of a natural who cannot braid to save her life, with or without tutorials.

This spring, I noticed that i now have heat damaged hair in the front. To those who know me, know that this is an absolute nightmare. My bang was the only part of my hair that looked…well good.

See that? Realizing the fact that I’m not apart of the baby hair brigade, I had to throw this head band on to add SOMETHING to this look. I can’t seem to get the back of my hair to look like much of anything. My curls come out chunky and my twist outs suck back there. Hell, they even suck on my bangs sometimes. Then I get so fed up that I end up geling all of my hair up into a very tiny puff due to my thin boring hair.

Ignoring the unfavorable mean mug, as you can see I had to straighten my hair to get my pony/puff to look somewhat presentable for leaving my bedroom- which is why, ladies and gents, I have heat damage.

Some days I consider big chopping, but I know it won’t be ideal for me at all. I will cry and never leave my house. But I know for a fact I never want to perm my hair again. The horror of scalp burns and spaghetti hair is just too much for me. So I’ve been stuck in my protective styling phase as of late.

They look great and last long. I love braids, and I might give Faux Dreads a try.

But my entire point of writing this was, I thought being natural would be an amazing experience of getting to know my hair and getting in touch with my own culture, even making friends with other naturals. But it hasn’t..and that’s okay too.

Maybe I’ll keep trying in between braids, or maybe I’ll try something completely different, who knows. I’ve learned that my journey is just that, mine. I just want healthy hair from this point on and whatever skills I pick up along the way to getting healthy hair.

Music Monday | Together Again by Janet Jackson

🎶Happy Monday everyone!🎶

I’m kicking off this Music Monday series with a throwback. Y’all remember when Janet Jackson made music? Like way before being Justin Timberlake exposed her nipple to the entire Super Bowl stadium and home viewers?

janet_jackson_-_together_again

Okaaaay, maybe I don’t remember her prior to that, but I sure learned the Jackson’s discography as a child.

Anyway, I created a playlist on Spotify with slow jams and I always throw that song somewhere in the mix. It’s truly one of those feel good songs that everyone knows at least the melody. Here, let me just give you the video
Together Again Lyrics

There are times

When I look above

And beyond

There are times when I feel your love

Around me baby

I’ll never forget my baby

(I’ll never forget you)

There are times when I look above and beyond

There are times when I feel your love around me baby

I’ll never forget my baby

When I feel that I don’t belong

Draw my strength

From the words when you said

Hey it’s about you baby

Look deeper inside you baby

[BRIDGE]

Dream about us together again

What I want us together again baby

I know we’ll be together again cuz

[CHORUS:]

Everywhere I go

Every smile I see

I know you are there

Smilin back at me

Dancin in moonlight

I know you are free

Cuz I can see your star

Shinin down on me

(together again, ooh)

Good times we’ll share again

(together again, ooh)

Makes me wanna dance

(together again, ooh)

Say it loud and proud

(together again, ooh)

All my love’s for you

Always been a true angel to me

Now above

I can’t wait for you to wrap your wings around me baby

Oooh wrap them around me baby

Sometimes hear you whisperin

No more pain

No worries will you ever see now baby

I’m so happy for my baby

[BRIDGE]

[CHORUS]

(together again, ooh)

Good times we’ll share again

(together again, ooh)

Ooh it makes me wanna dance

(together again, ooh)

Say it loud and proud

(together again, ooh)

All my love’s for you

There are times when I look above and beyond

There are times when I feel you smile upon me baby

I’ll never forget my baby

What I’d give just to hold you close

As on earth

In heaven we will be together baby

Together again my baby

[CHORUS (2x)]

Together Again  was written in 1997 because Janet Jackson lost a friend to HIV/AIDS.As you can hear, this song has a dope house beat, which is very popular even today. It was decided to use a house beat in the official video as a celebration of life. She even mentions in an interview with NewNowNext, that she felt the song was silly, but she wanted to record it because that was what was in her heart.

To me, that’s pretty beautiful. Hearing this particular song always takes me back to feeling carefree and riding on the Belt Parkway with the windows down on a summer day. The  craziest part is, people are still singing along to this gem exactly 20 years later.

Janet Jackson has even supported AIDS LIFE, a company founding in the early 90s that raises money for people who live with HIV and AIDS. This group is especially good at raising awareness and breaking stigmas about what used to be an extremely taboo topic.

Have you heard this song before? Do you like it? Let me know and I’ll be back next Monday to tell you what else I’m jamming to!

Aliyah Explains Music Monday

In the getting to know Aliyah phase, everyone quickly learns I love music.

I grew up in a very musical household, so naturally, music is very important to me. I even used to keep a separate  diary for music at one point in my life, and looking back, that was kinda dope for a middle school aged girl. All my posts in the Music Monday category will be about a particular song that’s been in my heavy rotation.

I was actually inspired to give this a shot for quite a while now, since I honestly just tweet amazing bars and or lovey dovey lyrics that I really want to shout from the rooftops.

If you’re into reading about what i’m listening to, definitely check out the Music Monday tag, on Monday of course!

Aliyah Explains The Blog Change

Hey guys!

If you don’t already know, I used to have a blog called PinkPowerRangerx. Aside from the relevancy, I wanted to make a change. Since I’ve done a tad bit more growing up, I spoke to a couple of people regaurding which direction I should go with blogging and branding.

While it was almost heartbreaking to switch URL’s and leave behind some real gems, it was definately time for a fresh start. As part of this blog, I might throw up some oldies for new readers, ya know, just to compare how far I’ve come as a blogger.

Tbh, I actually feel pretty motivated to create content for the world again. I can’t wait to reveal all the new stuff I have in store for my new baby.

See you guys soon!
